What are the Different Kinds of Miscarriage?

A miscarriage is the unplanned end of a pregnancy with the unwanted expulsion of the embryo or fetus.

A miscarriage is said to have taken place if a pregnancy ends before week 24. After that stage it is considered a stillbirth.

Up to 20 percent of all pregnancies end in miscarriage, with the majority (80%) of these occurring in the first 12 weeks and some happening in the very early stages of pregnancy before the woman is even aware she has conceived.

So what are the different kinds of miscarriage (medically referred to as a spontaneous abortion) and, if you follow all the advice and pregnancy tips can you avoid it happening?

A chemical pregnancy

This is the term given when an egg is fertilised, but dies shortly after implantation. As pregnancy tests can now give very early indications of conception, more of these chemical pregnancies are being detected. Chemical pregnancies usually result from chromosomal abnormalities in the fertilised egg. For women who have not taken a pregnancy test the only sign may be slightly later, or heavier, than usual period.

Blighted Ovum

This is also known as anembryonic pregnancy and again occurs very early on in a pregnancy when a fertilised egg attaches to the uterine wall, but an embryo fails to develop. Women may have signs of a pregnancy, but an ultrasound will fail to detect a heartbeat. A dilation and curettage procedure (D&C) may have to be carried out if the woman does not spontaneously miscarry. This involves the opening and scraping of the uterus.
