The Side Effects of Contraceptive Pills

The combined contraceptive pill is a tablet containing artificial versions of two hormones, oestrogen and progesterone. The hormones in the pill prevent a woman's ovaries from releasing an egg (ovulating) and make it difficult for sperm to reach an egg, or for an egg to implant itself in the lining of the womb.

The progestogen-only pill works by thickening the mucus in the neck of the womb, so it is harder for sperm to penetrate into the womb and reach an egg.

In the UK, there are about 3.5 million women "on the Pill" which is around 30% of all females of reproductive age, so statistically the Pill is very safe. All guides with pregnancy tips suggest it is a safe method of contraception and has no effects on future pregnancies.

Reported side effects of the contraceptive pill:

•    headaches
•    sickness
•    tender breasts
•    some weight gain
•    spotting of blood between periods.

Many women find changing to a different brand helps eliminate some or all of these side effects.

One positive side effect is that research has shown that in a study of almost 50,000 women over a period of 40 years, those who took the pill were less likely to die of cancer, heart disease or stroke. The same report stated that breast cancer rates were no different in women who took the pill which goes against some scare tales about the pill causing breast carcinoma.
